In this episode of The Dive Locker Podcast we learn about adaptive scuba diving with Jim Elliott and Tinamarie Hernandez of Diveheart.
Welcome To The Show!
Welcome to The Dive Locker Podcast, the podcast for dive professionals where we bring you the latest in diving industry resources that make you excellent at teaching techniques, risk management and dive business.
Teaching divers with disabilities to dive has been in our industry for some time. Although there are a handful of organizations out there, one has had tremendous growth and success over the last two decades. Diveheart is a nonprofit tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization.
The purpose of Diveheart is to provide and support educational scuba diving programs that are open to any child, adult or veteran with a disability, with the hope of providing both physical and psychological therapeutic value to that person. So today I have founder and president Jim Elliott and Executive Director Tinamarie Hernandez on the show to discuss what is adaptive scuba diving and how Diveheart helps dive professionals train divers with all types of disabilities.
Look you might be saying well I don’t feel comfortable teaching divers with disabilities. I get it. But not only does Jim and Tinamarie break down the barriers to teaching individuals with disabilities, but also they give encouragement for dive boat staff who have someone on their boat with a disability, a dive center owner who has a disabled customer, or an independent instructor who could reach out to this unique population.
By the end of this episode I think you’ll feel more knowledgeable, equipped and empowered for sharing the underwater world with those who have disabilities, through the resources of Diveheart.
