In this episode of The Dive Locker Podcast we learn some great ice breakers that build trust, communication and likability among students in your classes.
Welcome To The Show!
Welcome to The Dive Locker Podcast, the podcast for dive professionals where we bring you the latest in diving industry resources that make you excellent at teaching techniques, risk management and dive business.
A quick way to get to know your students and for them to get to know each other is by doing ice breakers. It doesn’t matter what environment you’re in, if you have a group of people that don’t know each other this is a fun and lighthearted way to connect each other.
So why do them? Well research has shown that even simple icebreakers are powerful in developing trust and likability among participants. Research also shows that icebreakers stimulate communications by making people comfortable to speak up. It also improves teamwork which is vital for buddy teams in your classes. For all of these reasons icebreakers should be a legitimate part of your teaching.
We want icebreakers to be effective so here are ten rules to keep in mind when performing ice breakers. These rules are courtesy of quizbreaker.com:
Keep it short
Keep it light
Involve everyone
Keep it encouraging
Keep it fun
Make it upbeat
Keep it moving
Keep it simple
Encourage everyone
Keep doing it!
So here are my top 7 ice breakers:
- Two Truths and a Lie
- Scuba Tic Tac Toe
- Group Map
- Jenga
- The Reporter
- Bucket List
- Beach Ball *my favorite!
