LXD052 : Jarrod Jablonski

By Tec Clark Leave a Comment

Jarrod Jablonski – Legendary Technical Diving Instructor

In this episode of The League of Extraordinary Divers I chat with technical diving legend Jarrod Jablonski.

Hey everybody welcome to another episode of the League of Extraordinary Divers. It’s so great to have you here with me today.

If you’re a diver and you’re on social media, then I’m sure you’ve heard about Deep Dive Dubai. Yep, the largest indoor diving pool in the world. That name doesn’t even do it justice, the most EPIC indoor dive site in the world is actually more accurate. Folks this is designed as a flooded sunken city sinkhole that is – are you ready for this 60 meters or 196 feet deep. It is awesome!

Well today we talk with Deep Dive Dubai’s director Jarrod Jablonski about this new project he’s been working on. But also, JJ is the founder and CEO of Global Underwater Explorers aka GUE, and of Halcyon Diving Equipment and Extreme Exposure.

Bio

Jarrod Jablonski is the founder of GUE and chairman of the board. JJ is an avid explorer, researcher, author, and instructor who teaches and dives in oceans and caves around the world. Trained as a geologist, Jarrod is the founder and president of GUE and CEO of Halcyon and Extreme Exposure while remaining active in conservation, exploration, and filming projects worldwide.

His explorations regularly place him in the most remote locations in the world, including several world record excursions at 300ft to cave penetrations in excess of 24,000feet/7km; these dives include bottom times of 12 hours with total immersions near 30 hours. Jarrod is also an author with dozens of publications, including three books and several forthcoming.

I’ve had the pleasure of knowing JJ since he was a college student just learning about cave diving, and it is such a treat to see all that he’s accomplished all these years.

You’re going to love this interview, especially if you’re a technical diver.

098 All About GUE

By Tec Clark Leave a Comment

In this episode of The Dive Locker Podcast you’ll learn about the dive training agency GUE and what makes them unique with Jarrod Jablonski.

Welcome To The Show!

Welcome to The Dive Locker Podcast, the podcast for dive professionals where we bring you the latest in diving industry resources that make you excellent at teaching techniques, risk management and dive business.

Last week we heard about RAID, well this week we’re going to learn about another relatively new dive training organization, and that is GUE. Global Underwater Explorers.

Global Underwater Explorers (GUE) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that represents a global network of GUE communities, empowered by highly refined diver training programs and inspired to explore and conserve the world’s aquatic environments.

GUE is a leader in scuba education, developing numerous industry-first training protocols with a global cast of extremely knowledgeable professional educators and producing divers of exceptional quality. These educational programs enable divers to enjoy a nearly unlimited range of opportunities, including conservation programs, exploration projects, and documentation adventures. GUE-trained divers are found in far-reaching global communities that offer many social and support opportunities alongside a host of unique and challenging underwater projects.

Mission Statement
Global Underwater Explorers is building global communities of passionate divers, empowered by high-quality training and organized to support wide-ranging diving activities. These communities contain and partner with dedicated explorers, conservationists and scientific researchers to conduct a diversity of aquatic initiatives around the world.

Jarrod Jablonski

So today I speak with Jarrod Jablonski.

He’s the founder of GUE and chairman of the board. JJ is an avid explorer, researcher, author, and instructor who teaches and dives in oceans and caves around the world. Trained as a geologist, Jarrod is the founder and president of GUE and CEO of Halcyon and Extreme Exposure. He remaine active in conservation, exploration, and filming projects worldwide.

Now I have pulled this episode from a larger interview we did for The League of Extraordinary Divers Podcast, that episode will be coming out in a few weeks. But since he is in Dubai it has been really challenging to schedule our interview especially with his new absolutely epic project Deep Dive Dubai.

059 The Importance of The Swim Test for Open Water Diver Courses

By Tec Clark Leave a Comment

In this episode of The Dive Locker Podcast we uncover the importance of the swim test during Open Water Diver courses.

Welcome To The Show!

Welcome to The Dive Locker Podcast, the podcast for dive professionals where we bring you the latest in diving industry resources that make you excellent at teaching techniques, risk management and dive business.

Thanks for being with me today! Well in this episode we are gonna talk about the importance of the swim test for open water diver courses. RSTC says one thing, the agencies say something else. Then you’ve got variations of the test to consider as well as rules that can be, and are being, violated because instructors are letting them. There’s some great items to discuss, clarify and bring to light. Im also going to discuss tips for administering the swim test to make it as effective as possible.

Now we all know you need to be able to swim to be a certified diver, right? But what does “able to swim” mean? What is the ability needed and what should be measured? And by the way we are only addressing open water diver in this episode, the leadership swim tests could be a whole different episode. First, let’s break down what it is and what it isn’t. It’s not to measure fitness, endurance or technique. Although some of those might be on display, it’s not what we’re focused on. Instead the swim test is to demonstrate aquatic comfort and proficiency in the ability to keep the airway unobstructed in water. This is done while moving or swimming, and not moving, stationary. Strokes used and how fast one swims are also not measured directly. Yet indirectly they do give us a snapshot of big picture aquatic abilities.

Agency Swim Test Standards

So lets look at what our agencies using as standards for this test. And special thanks my colleagues for providing me with their standards and rationale, thanks to Sage Dalton with SSI, Steve Lewis with RAID, Derik Crotts with PSS, Ben Brown with SEI, Kris with NAUI and Jarrod Jablonski with GUE.

First here is what the RSTC standard states:
Physical Conditioning and Watermanship Evaluation. The student shalleffectively demonstrate basic watermanship ability by performing, to an instructor, the watermanship evaluation required by a training organization. This watermanship evaluation shall include either: a) continuous 200 yard (183 metre) surface distance swim and a 10 minute survival swim/float without the use of mask, fins, snorkel or of other swimming aids. b) 300 yard swim using mask, fins and snorkel, and a 10 minute survival swim/float without mask, fins, snorkel or other swimming aid. If an exposure suit is used, the wearer must be neutrally buoyant at the surface.

043 Learning From Human Errors In Diving

By Tec Clark Leave a Comment

In this episode of The Dive Locker Podcast you’ll learn from Gareth Lock about how mistakes in diving are usually a result of many small problems along the way.

Welcome To The Show!

Welcome to The Dive Locker Podcast, the podcast for dive professionals where we bring you the latest in diving industry resources that make you excellent at teaching techniques, risk management and dive business.

Hey everyone welcome to the show it’s great to be with you today. To err is human. Yep we make mistakes. But did you know that a mistake or an error usually is a multi faceted event that could have been hours, weeks or even years in the making. Hard to believe huh, but it’s true.

Gareth Lock

Today’s guest is Gareth Lock with his company The Human Diver. Gareth has brought the field of human factors study to the diving industry.

Gareth Lock is a retired Royal Air Force senior officer Navigator of 25 years, who was both a senior supervisor and a tactical flight instructor on an operational C-130 flying squadron. He has a MSc in Aerospace Systems from Kingston University and spent his last 5 years in the RAF as a Requirements Manager for Defensive Aids Systems working across all levels of industry, research and the military from front-line user to very senior officers, both in the UK and in the US, often at highly classified levels.

Gareth is an Open Circuit advanced trimix diver (Technical Diver Level 2 with Global Underwater Explorers) and normoxic trimix CCR diver (JJ-CCR with TDI) with around 800 dives over 12 years of diving. He is also an accomplished underwater photographer with a deep interest in cold, green water wreck diving.

Shortly after leaving the RAF in 2014, he delivered eight months of Well Operations Crew Resource Management (WOCRM) training and coaching to oil workers in an offshore environment, the results of which were presented by Gareth and Phil Smith (Managing Director of Critical Team Performance) at the oil and gas industry’s international (IADC Human Factors) conference in Houston. In June 2015, Gareth completed the TOP-SET three-day Senior Investigator root cause analysis course, considered an industry standard in Oil & Gas, heavy industry, and rail incident and accident investigation.

In 2012, Gareth started his PhD, examining the role of human factors in scuba diving incidents. He is published in a number of magazines and journals, has presented at nine international diving conferences on Human Factors in diving, and manages the Diving Incident and Safety Management System incident database.

He has recently been appointed Global Underwater Explorer’s Director for Risk Management, responsible for developing the performance of instructors and instructor trainers and building a Just Culture within this learning-cultured organization. And he just released his first documentary called “If Only”. This documentary follows a technical diver who died from not having his oxygen bottle turned on in his rebreather. But, it’s not about that one singular action that caused his death, in fact there were a variety of errors along the way that contributed to his not doing that one protocol. It is an epic documentary, so we are going to talk with Gareth about that.
