The DEMA Show is back my friends! Yes! I’m so excited about this. Now, let me pause here because there are many of you who have never been to a DEMA Show or don’t even know what DEMA is. DEMA stands for the Diving Equipment and Marketing Association. It’s a not for profit organization that is the trade association for the international scuba diving industry. With more than 1,400 business members, DEMA’s mission is bringing businesses together to grow the Diving Industry worldwide.

And, each year DEMA puts on the largest diving industry trade show in the world. It attracts hundreds of exhibitors and thousands of dive and travel industry professionals from around the world each year.

For me, it’s not a question. I attend it every year. It literally charges my batteries and makes me love this industry even more every year. And, I can’t recommend it enough for you as a dive pro – no matter what level you are, no matter if you’re independent, part time, full time, does not matter this is the show to go to if you’re a dive pro.

So today I have the President and CEO of DEMA, Tom Ingram on, to tell us all about this year’s show. Last year was virtual and now we get to be in person in Las Vegas baby! So I wanted to have Tom tell us all about this years show and what we can expect.

By Tec Clark Leave a Comment

In this episode of The Dive Locker Podcast we just want to thank our listeners for being with us on our two year anniversary.

Welcome To The Show!

Welcome to The Dive Locker Podcast, the podcast for dive professionals where we bring you the latest in diving industry resources that make you excellent at teaching techniques, risk management and dive business.

Well, this week marks the two year anniversary of The Dive Locker Podcast. Wow, I am humbled. Why? Because the goal of this show has been to enhance the skills of diving professionals. And I thought there would be me an maybe a couple dozen others who found this helpful. I was wrong. We are right at 60,000 downloaded episodes – that is truly amazing considering this is a niche of a niche. Of outdoors category you got scuba podcasts, but we are actually for dive pro’s exclusively. So. I am absolutely blown away by the support you all have given this show over the last two years.

Thank you PATRONS!!

Future Episodes

So what’s next. We have done 105 episodes this is 106 and there are a lot more in the hopper. Now, I should mention that as I was reflecting on this show I notice that in iTunes this show starts at episode 6. Well in the beginning the first two or three episodes actually appeared in my other podcast The League of Extraordinary Divers! That was quite by mistake. But the thing is, I don’t know how to bring them over without completely altering this podcast and the episode sequence. So you can listen to them on The League of Extraordinary Divers Podcast. But I’m still missing episodes 4 and 5! As you can see I’m still learning. I’m such a novice even 2 years in.

So, back to the question, what’s next. First, there’s always new risk management stuff. We are going to tackle things that can be improved in our industry. Then there’s teaching, well there’s a buzz about kneeling, yep we will address training in neutral buoyancy. And we will be going heavy on diving business. I have partnered up with Jennifer Shaheen an absolute digital marketing guru. We are going to hit episodes to get you rocking and rolling in modern day digital marketing platforms.

Also coming up is DEMA Show in Las Vegas. I will be doing a couple episodes on this largest show in our industry. In fact I will be speaking at DEMA Show 2021 on line and in person at the show. And if your going to DEMA please connect with me so we can meet and say hi.

Oh and just a reminder Gareth Lock from episodes 43 & 101 will be hosting the first ever Human Factors in Diving Conference. The Human Factors in Diving Conference provides a unique opportunity to learn about the theoretical and practical applications of human factors in diving. It has a great lineup of speakers and it can be watched live or on recorded presentation. Please check that out at hf-in-diving-conference.com

And speaking of speakers I will be inviting some of the biggest pro’s in diving to share their wisdom and experiences with you.

Hey this episode today is just meant to be short and sweet, and a thank you.

So I am absolutely blessed. Blessed by the professional contacts and friendships that have started due to this podcast. I truly appreciate you all, your wonderful comments, your friend requests on Facebook, all of it. You all are rockstars and thank you for being a part of the Dive Locker podcast.

056 Paying For Instructor Training And Renewals Tax Free with Tom Ingram

By Tec Clark Leave a Comment

In this episode of The Dive Locker Podcast we learn how professional certifications and membership renewals may be included in Tax Free 529 Savings Accounts with Tom Ingram.

Welcome To The Show!

Welcome to The Dive Locker Podcast, the podcast for dive professionals where we bring you the latest in diving industry resources that make you excellent at teaching techniques, risk management and dive business.

Hi everyone, welcome to The Dive Locker. Many of you may have seen a recent news item from DEMA called U.S. Federal Bill Supporting 529 Plans for Professional Certification. So since I have 529 plans in place for both my kids to go to college, this really intrigued me. You mean if my kids wanted to use those education funds that my wife and I put aside for them, to become dive pro’s it could be done and tax free? Heck yeah!

We can also use these accounts for our own training AND professional membership renewals. So I reached out to Tom Ingram, President and CEO of DEMA – the Diving Equipment and Marketing Association for more details about this, and what is needed to pass this legislation.

Items In This Episode

  • What is a 529 Savings Account?
  • How can this be setup to pay for professional diving certifications and renewals?
  • What needs to be done to get this approved?
  • Email your Representatives and Senators here

041 Reopening Your Dive Business Amid COVID-19 Restrictions

By Tec Clark Leave a Comment

In this episode of The Dive Locker Podcast you’ll discover DEMA’s outstanding resources for re-opening dive businesses during and after COVID-19 restrictions.

Welcome To The Show!

Welcome to The Dive Locker Podcast, the podcast for dive professionals where we bring you the latest in diving industry resources that make you excellent at teaching techniques, risk management and dive business.

So things are changing with respect to COVID-19. Retail businesses are opening back up, restaurants are back to life, we’re getting there folks. And in our industry we have seen dive boats are running and scuba centers opening back up too. As you know training agencies and other organizations are stepping up to give guidance on how to do the “new normal” – again every time i hear that expression I picture the meme running around the internet which is a picture of Samuel L Jackson in his character in Pulp Fiction, where he has this intense disgusted expression on his face as he’s saying “Say New Normal One More Time”.

DEMA’s Retailer Resources

But no one has put as much research and development into resources for dive businesses as DEMA – the Diving Equipment and Marketing Association. They put together a committee called the 2020 Retailer Resource Committee. It includes:
•Robin Bostater, Kaizen SCUBA, Santa Fe, NM
•Bill Cole, Sea Experience, Ft. Lauderdale, FL
•Merial Currer, Patriot Scuba, Occoquan, VA (Chair)
•PatrickHammer, Dive Right In Scuba, Chicago, IL
•Joseph Letts, Letts Dive,St. Petersburg, FL
•Rich Thomas, International Scuba, Carrollton,TX

Also, Dan Orr of Dan Orr Consulting but I’ve got to include Betty Orr – because no matter what great stuff Dan does, Betty has her hand in it giving it excellence!

Now this committee has create three downloadable resources called the RE-LAUNCHING DIVE RETAIL POST COVID-19, they come in Phase 1, Phase 2 and Phase 3. So I invited Tom Ingram, President and CEO of DEMA for an interview to talk about the items in these great resources.

But before that interview I want to let you know about our next week’s episode it is all about professional liability insurance. With all the options out there which one is the best for you? you want to listen to this episode as I’ll be going into some extreme detail so that you can make an informed decision about your professional liability insurance policy. Feel free to drop me a line at scubaguru.com if you have any questions you’d like answered on that episode.

Alright pro’s here’s my interview with Tom Ingram of DEMA.

Items In This Episode

  • RE-LAUNCHING DIVE RETAIL POST COVID-19: Phase I
  • RE-LAUNCHING DIVE RETAIL POST COVID-19: Phase II
  • RE-LAUNCHING DIVE RETAIL POST COVID-19: Phase III
