In this episode of The Dive Locker Podcast we look at if dive professionals should be required to take continuing education units.
Welcome To The Show!
Welcome to The Dive Locker Podcast, the podcast for dive professionals where we bring you the latest in diving industry resources that make you excellent at teaching techniques, risk management and dive business.
Over the decades, a repeated discussion topic keeps coming up in our industry. Should Dive professionals be required to do more to maintain their professional status? Now we know per training agency standards that some agencies have teaching requirements to maintain your current status. For example you may have to teach X number of students in a particular course or X number of courses in a given time frame to stay current as an active instructor.
And of course we all know to keep your CPR and first aid credentials up-to-date. Since they automatically expire every two years we’re not talking certification expiration. But what we are talking about is should instructors and divemasters do something more on a regular basis to keep proficient?
Other professions require those holding certifications or professional memberships to engage in continuing education units also known as CEUs. So today we look at the pros and cons of requiring CEUs for divemasters and instructors.

- Why the need?
- How many CEUs and it what time frame?
- Who would sanction them?
- How much would they be?
