133 Exploring The Go Diving Show With Mark Evans

By Tec Clark Leave a Comment

In this episode of The Dive Locker Podcast we learn about the success of the Go Diving Show and what it means for our industry.

Welcome To The Show!

Welcome to The Dive Locker Podcast, the podcast for dive professionals where we bring you the latest in diving industry resources that make you excellent at teaching techniques, risk management and dive business.

In many given recreational industries there are consumer shows. These shows could be outdoor shows for hunting and camping, RV shows for recreational vehicles of all kinds, boat shows for all aspects of boating – and these shows put on display in an expo hall all the different products – big and small – and services that support their industry.

Consumer shows are also a good measure of interest in a particular industry. After 9/11 a shift happened. People started to think about how short life is and all of a sudden folks in the US decided not to wait until they retired to get an RV and travel, so in 2002 and 2003 RV sales went through the roof and RV consumer shows were extremely popular.

Well in diving we have consumer shows as well. Beneath The Sea, Boston Sea Rovers, The Blue Wild, Our World Underwater, The Scuba Show, are some of the consumer shows that have come and gone in our industry. However, one of the absolute best shows in the industry is new Go Diving Show in the UK.

The Go Diving Show is the brainchild of Mark Evans. He and his wife Penny and his partner Ross run Scuba Diver Magazine in the UK and have branched out into custom versions of Scuba Diver Magazine for other markets worldwide including Australia and New Zealand, Canada and the US.

About Mark Evans

Mark is one of the top underwater journalists in the diving industry. Mark Evans has been diving since the age of 10. He answered an ad for a water sports editor and his career in diving took off. At the age of 25 he became the youngest diving magazine editor as was Editor of Sport Diver Magazine in the United Kingdom. He held that position for 18 years which allowed him the opportunity to literally dive all over the world. In fact he’s an extraordinary diver on the League of Extraordinary Divers podcast. You must listen to that and his diving story about the sheep. You’ll cry laughing at that one.

In 2020 Mark and his team founded the Go Diving Show in Coventry, England. It was postponed in 2021 for Covid and now its back and just happened last month. This is a brilliant cutting edge diving show for both divers and pro’s and I wanted Mark to come on and tell us about the show and the people visiting the show. I think you’ll be encouraged in two ways after listening to this episode. First, you will see that our industry is rebounding. People are ready to dive again and travel. Second, check out how Mark makes his brand the Go Diving Show stand out from the pack. He is creative and he doesn’t like status quo. And for that he is gaining tremendous rewards.

So listen to this episode with both of those takeaways in mind.

132 Paid Vs. Organic Digital Reach With Jennifer Shaheen

By Tec Clark Leave a Comment

In this episode of The Dive Locker Podcast we learn about the differences in paid ads versus organic digital marketing reach.

Welcome To The Show!

Welcome to The Dive Locker Podcast, the podcast for dive professionals where we bring you the latest in diving industry resources that make you excellent at teaching techniques, risk management and dive business.

So we all know that to market your business, your sales and your services is not about print ads in newspapers, handing out flyers on street corners and billboards. The world of being able to market yourselves is primarily digital. But just as with any type of advertising there are costs, and we have to balance those costs with effective reach.

So today we’ve invited back digital marketing expert Jennifer Shaheen with the awesome company Technology Therapy Group to discuss paid versus organic digital reach. This is a great overview of how and when Facebook posts, Instagram posts and website specials, should go into paid campaigns like Facebook Ads, Instagram Ads and Google Adsense and more.

About Jennifer Shaheen

Here’s a little about Jennifer. Expertly guiding business owners through the intersection of marketing and technology for the past 15 years, Jennifer Shaheen has a unique expertise that combines technical prowess, entrepreneurial insight, and marketing acumen. Her marketing strategy, brand development, and small business operations skills have been engaged in the retail, manufacturing, hospitality, health care, and travel industries.

A thought leader and visionary, Jennifer seeks continually to translate today’s digital mysteries into understandable, accessible, actionable information. In addition to teaching at Social Media Marketing University and contributing technology articles to Bank of America’s Community Forum, Jennifer has appeared repeatedly on MSNBC’s Your Money with JJ Ramberg, to discuss entrepreneurial and business management issues.

Specialties:
Marketing Strategy, Data Analysis, Google Ads, Facebook Ads, and all Social Media platforms.

I met Jennifer two years ago when I was her moderator in the DEMA Virtual Show in 2020. Her presentation was outstanding. So I checked out her company The Technology Therapy Group and I took some of her online courses. I was blown away by the content and the takeaways. And I realized how beneficial her training programs would be to everyone who listens to this show – whether and independent instructor, charter boat operator, or manager or owner of a dive center – large or small.

The specialty area of digital marketing is absolutely critical to any diving professional. Jennifer and I co-presented at the DEMA Show last year in Vegas and we had here on episode 109 where she discussed Digital Marketing Channels. And, I’m so impressed with her company that I became an affiliate and I strongly recommend her training and mentoring programs specific to your marketing needs.

131 The Cousteau in All of Us

By Tec Clark Leave a Comment

In this episode of The Dive Locker Podcast we learn about how the passion of Jacques Cousteau exists in all of us dive professionals.

Welcome To The Show!

Welcome to The Dive Locker Podcast, the podcast for dive professionals where we bring you the latest in diving industry resources that make you excellent at teaching techniques, risk management and dive business.

This past weekend I finally watched the documentary Becoming Cousteau. Now, I, like many other dive professionals my age, grew up watching the Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau on television and THAT is how we fell in love with the underwater world. So to watch a documentary that encompasses Jacques Cousteau’s entire life and works, like the AquaLung, The Silent World movie, The Calypso, his TV show, the Cousteau Society and his family life – was just a glorious unveiling of a time capsule. And it deeply touched me.

In fact, as soon as the opening music and images of The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau played, I literally was choked up. Not only did it remind me of being a kid eating TV dinners with my mom in front of the TV, it also stirred my youthful fantasies about someday working underwater. And that is what I do today.

But there’s something more to that documentary that inspired this episode. I realized that it wasn’t just amazing cinematography and spectacular destinations, it was Cousteau’s passion and genius that drove the success of that TV show and frankly all of his works. Friends, I want you to know that you have a passion and genius that others see in you as a dive professional. And that is what we’re gonna explore today.

130 Is Wearing a Wetsuit During a Swim Test a Standards Violation?

By Tec Clark Leave a Comment

In this episode of The Dive Locker Podcast we learn about how wearing a wetsuit during a swim test could be a standards violation.

Welcome To The Show!

Welcome to The Dive Locker Podcast, the podcast for dive professionals where we bring you the latest in diving industry resources that make you excellent at teaching techniques, risk management and dive business.

This past weekend as we were conducting divemaster training at the lake, a couple dive centers were conducting swim tests with their open water diver students. The remarks came up as our divemasters in training looked on. “They look so bouyant.” “They’re literally just floating and doing nothing to stay afloat.” “Are you allowed to wear wetsuits during the swim test?”

Needless to say we are proud of our young leaders when they sense that things aren’t right. And from that an outstanding discussion about standards ensued. Thus the title of this episode. Is Wearing a Wetsuit During a Swim Test a Standards Violation? The answer is there’s a right way and a wrong way. And I’m gonna ask you to share this episode with anyone you know who does swim tests with students wearing wetsuits. The reason why is that many pro’s are actually violating swim test standards doing this.

Items In This Episode

  • Swimming test standards of RSTC, SSI and PADI
  • Must be neutrally buoyant when wearing exposure suits

129 The Amazing Facial Immersion Drill

By Tec Clark Leave a Comment

In this episode of The Dive Locker Podcast we learn about one of the best exercises to instill aquatic comfort, the facial immersion drill.

Welcome To The Show!

Welcome to The Dive Locker Podcast, the podcast for dive professionals where we bring you the latest in diving industry resources that make you excellent at teaching techniques, risk management and dive business.

If there is one exercise that I could hold up as being the most significant exercise for Aquatic comfort it would be the facial immersion drill.

This technique has been used by freedivers, competitive free divers and it’s my understanding that the late Tom Mount, was the first to teach this in technical diver training. It is by far the fastest way to bring Aquatic comfort for all mask clearing exercises. It’s simple, quick to master and does not take long to do in confined water or open water dives.

This drill even taps into diving physiology. Yes the mammalian diving reflex can be stimulated in humans, and not only under life threatening circumstances.

So today I want to share with you my favorite skill for bringing Aquatic comfort to freedivers, beginning open water diver students, Divemasters and Instructors.

Items In This Episode

  • steps of the facial immersion drill
  • Mammalian Diving Reflex
  • Patrons log into Patreon to see the free demonstration video
  • Mastering Skin Diving Ditch and Recovery online course
