068 The Stories of Diving Industry Legends

By Tec Clark Leave a Comment

In this episode of The Dive Locker Podcast we point to the stories of legends in the diving industry.

Welcome To The Show!

Welcome to The Dive Locker Podcast, the podcast for dive professionals where we bring you the latest in diving industry resources that make you excellent at teaching techniques, risk management and dive business.

Well it’s the Holidays. This is the week of Christmas and Hanukkah and it also happens to be the day before my birthday. Yes, December 24th I turn 53 years old. Wow, that’s a high number. But at this age I do a lot of reflecting on the past. The past through our life experiences is what shapes us. And I like to honor that, both the good and the bad of it.

I guess this sentimental side of me is also why I have another podcast called The League of Extraordinary Divers. We are approaching our 50th guest. All of which are some of the top names in our industry along with not so well known names, I call them the young guns. But all of them are legends in our industry, because they’ve done legendary things in diving. So today, in honor of my birthday, I want to share with you some of the legends in our industry, and point you to some of their amazing stories.

067 How To Apply The Four Trends In Specialty Sport Retailing With Doug McNeese

By Tec Clark Leave a Comment

In this episode of The Dive Locker Podcast we learn how to apply the four trends in specialty sport retailing with Doug McNeese.

Welcome To The Show!

Welcome to The Dive Locker Podcast, the podcast for dive professionals where we bring you the latest in diving industry resources that make you excellent at teaching techniques, risk management and dive business.

In episode 62 of The Dive Locker we had a chat with Doug McNeese about the four trends in Specialty Sport Retailing. If you heard that episode you’ll remember those trends were Personalization, Cross Channel Merchandising, the Customer Experience and finally Inventory. In that episode Doug really introduced these concepts and the bigger picture of what they mean.

But in today’s episode Doug brings specifics, details and examples of how you can embrace these trends and capitalize on them. And like I said last time, it does not matter what level of dive professional you are or what business model you follow. Whether an independent instructor all the way to owning your own dive center, at some point you’ll retail your services and products.

Who Is Doug McNeese?

Doug is President of Scuba Schools International (SSI)’s International Business Development where he travels the world educating dive centers on how to be more successful in their businesses. He was raised working in his father’s dive center, and he eventually bought it from him. It’s called simply, The Dive Shop.

Doug went on to purchase the National Association of Scuba Diving Schools (NASDS). He made remarkable improvements to NASDS. Then saw the opportunity to merge with SSI and nearly a decade later he purchased SSI. And most recently he sold SSI to the HEAD Group where it is flourishing and he is still leading professionals with his secrets to success learned from his early days.

Doug is highly respected in the diving industry and he won the DEMA Reaching out award in 2017. And as you’ll hear he loves to give back to the industry and he has done this through his efforts with both the Platinum Pro Foundation and Sea of Change Foundation.

066 Master Your Domain Part 3: The Open Water

By Tec Clark Leave a Comment

In this episode of The Dive Locker Podcast we look at how to be a master of your domain in the open water environment.

Welcome To The Show!

Welcome to The Dive Locker Podcast, the podcast for dive professionals where we bring you the latest in diving industry resources that make you excellent at teaching techniques, risk management and dive business.

Well, today we continue a three part series on mastery of domain. Again Mastery of Domain is an instructional concept that’s all about one’s command and control of an environment. And in diving instruction we have three unique environments that we must master and be in control of – they are the classroom, the pool or confined water, and the open water.

And today we’re going to look at how you can absolutely be a master of your open water domain. I would like for you to consider something. Have you ever had a job where you were assigned an office? Many of you have and I have too. But think about how you were uncomfortable with this new environment at first. Perhaps it’s the furniture layout or where your phone is located or where your computer monitor is positioned. Soon you’re moving things around and putting decorations on the walls and it has become a comfortable environment.

Well guess what? Your office as a dive pro is the open water environment. Whether it’s the ocean, a lake, a river, a quarry, a spring, a sinkhole, even an aquarium, you must have enough mastery of that environment to be as calm and settled in as your office. In this episode I’m gonna share some great strategies for making the open water a comfortable domain in which you teach and supervise others.

Welcome To The Show!

Welcome to The Dive Locker Podcast, the podcast for dive professionals where we bring you the latest in diving industry resources that make you excellent at teaching techniques, risk management and dive business.

Today we launch a three part series on mastery of domain. So what does that mean? Mastery of Domain is an instructional concept that was first introduced to me in of all places, the police academy. In essence it is all about one’s command and control of an environment. And in diving instruction we have three unique environments that we must master and be in control of – they are the classroom, the pool or confined water and the open water.

And today we’re going to look at how you can absolutely be a master of your classroom. When you truly are comfortable and in control of the classroom environment, the experience for the student changes. They actually learn better. So here I will share some top techniques for you to obtain mastery of the classroom environment.
