Welcome To The Show!
Welcome to The Dive Locker Podcast, the podcast for dive professionals where we bring you the latest in diving industry resources that make you excellent at teaching techniques, risk management and dive business.
In my dive classes, especially in Rescue Diver and Divemaster, I teach about two important statistics regarding causes of death in diving. These are supported by Divers Alert Network and they come in two categories – operational and medical. Operationally the number one reason divers die is attributed to running out of gas/air supply. And medically, the number one reasons divers die is attributed to cardiac events.
Cardiac events in diving are something we as dive professionals really need to be aware of. Because there really are things you can do to mitigate the risk of cardiac event happening on your dives or in your classes. And if you do experience a student or a diver with a cardiac event, how you respond also matters. So to discuss this important topic I invited Dr. Douglas Ebersole onto this episode.
Doug is a cardiologist and Director of the Structural Heart Program at Lakeland Regional Health in Lakeland, Florida. Not only does he have a vast medical background that includes numerous high ranking positions in cardiology, specialized credentials in cardiac care, and numerous presentations and publications on the topic, but he also has a vast background as a dive professional.
Doug is a multi-agency certified instructor and instructor trainer. And he specializes in technical diving mostly in the area of rebreather instruction. He has numerous articles in many diving publications as well dozens of webinars regarding medical issues and diving.
