156 The Power of Friendliness in Diving Businesses

By Tec Clark Leave a Comment

In this episode of The Dive Locker Podcast we share why friendliness could be the most important value in a diving business.

Welcome To The Show!

Welcome to The Dive Locker Podcast, the podcast for dive professionals where we bring you the latest in diving industry resources that make you excellent at teaching techniques, risk management and dive business.

So I mentioned in the last episode that over the holiday break I was able to go to Colorado and take my family on their first ski and snowboard trip. We went to Steamboat Springs and skied at the famous Steamboat Ski Resort in and it was fantastic. So, on the sentimental side of this are a couple things of interest. First my wife and I have not been skiing or snowboarding, she skis I snowboard, for 20 years!

That’s because when our first child was born our priorities shifted and skiing just wasn’t on the radar anymore. And frankly I’m a bit of a ski snob and I didn’t want my kids to learn on the more affordable trips that we could take to the Carolinas or the East Coast because the majority of my ski background and snowboard background has been in Colorado, Canada and Europe. So we have never been able to afford a ski trip with the family to Colorado until last year.

The second emotional connection is that I learned how to ski at the age of 16 with my mom at Steamboat Springs. I was an only child, mom was a single parent and she saved up for years so that we could do that trip and on my 16th birthday that’s where we went. So it was amazingly cool to take my kids to Steamboat for their first ski trip and their first times learning skiing and snowboarding. My daughter is 19 she learned skiing and my son is 16 and he learned snowboarding. So as you can imagine this was an emotional and positively charged family vacation.

Now, I don’t think I’ve mentioned this to you but I’m writing a book. And interestingly enough it is not a diving book. It’s a business book on workplace culture. And for the book I interviewed Nelson Wingard the Director of the Steamboat Snowsports School. We dug into one of their biggest Workplace culture values and that was friendliness.

But when I actually got to go to Steamboat and my entire family was able to participate in skiing and snowboarding lessons, I got to experience their workplace culture firsthand. And I want to tease out some attributes for you in this episode. And the reason why this is so important is that the friendliness model fits any business, but especially businesses that deal with risk and stress. Especially in the area of newbies.

Items In This Episode

  • Steamboat Snowsports School
  • Friendliness
  • The nervousness of new divers
  • Connecting and building trust through friendliness

155 Making Safety Essential in 2023 with Gareth Lock

By Tec Clark Leave a Comment

In this episode of The Dive Locker Podcast we share a great resource to make dive safety a priority in your diving operations.

Welcome To The Show!

Welcome to The Dive Locker Podcast, the podcast for dive professionals where we bring you the latest in diving industry resources that make you excellent at teaching techniques, risk management and dive business.

Hey everybody welcome to 2023! I hope you had wonderful holidays I certainly did, spending lots of time with friends and family and also getting to do some epic travel to Colorado for some amazing skiing and snowboarding with my family.

So now that it’s 2023 what plans do you have? Any big resolutions that you’ve made? Many of us use this time to make both personal and professional resolutions for the new year. And in today’s episode I would like to encourage you on a professional resolution, and that is to open up your diving business in whatever way shape or form you’re diving business is, to the Human Diver program and specifically the Essentials course that Gareth Lock with the Human Diver puts on.

As you know we’ve had Gareth on this show on a couple different occasions but at the end of last year I took his Essentials online course. And I was blown away with how good it is and how much I learned. As you know I’m a risk management guy it’s my background and it’s my focus today. However the essentials course is so valuable and rich that I have now adopted it in the NSU Academic Diving Program for our staff.

And just this week as we kicked off our first semester of 2023, our first staff meeting was centered around this training that I had provided for each of our staff members. The feedback was amazing! And one of the greatest calls to action is what will you change about your diving operations after taking this course? That was pivotal for my team of Divemasters and Instructors. We all embraced the concept and came up with strategies to better our program.

In fact this course will now be included in our divemaster training and a requirement for anyone to work at our dive program.

So in today’s episode Gareth Lock and I discuss his Essentials course in detail and this is a great conversation that will have you understanding why the title is Essentials. Because in my opinion this training is essential for any diving professional of any level.

  • Close calls and near misses

154 Diving Industry Status Report: Post DEMA Show Reflections

By Tec Clark Leave a Comment

In this episode of The Dive Locker Podcast I give a diving industry status report based on my experiences at the DEMA Show 2022.

Welcome To The Show!

Welcome to The Dive Locker Podcast, the podcast for dive professionals where we bring you the latest in diving industry resources that make you excellent at teaching techniques, risk management and dive business.

So the dust settles and life is back to the normal grind for me as the DEMA Show in Orlando Florida November 1-4 has come and gone. For me, the DEMA Show timeframe is my busiest of the year. Not only is there so many things going on at my university, but I am a moderator for several weeks before the show doing DEMA educational sessions, I am finalizing travel details, I am emailing and texting people to set up meetings, and I am prepping presentations – this year I gave three presentations at DEMA. Whew, so I pretty much crashed when I came home.

But since the show I have done some serious reflecting. Reflecting on this industry as a whole and the health of our industry. Although there are a few things that raise eyebrows, there are plenty of things that bring a smile to my face and give me not only comfort, but true enthusiasm for the diving industry now and beyond. And in today’s episode I would like to share some observations with you and give you a type of status report on our industry based on my experiences at the DEMA Show 2022.
