LXD 020 : Les Stroud – Producer, Actor & Musician

By Tec Clark Leave a Comment

Les Stroud – Survivorman Producer, Actor & Musician

Today we have a rather well-known guest, the Survivorman himself Les Stroud.  Now for some of you, this is a household name – a celebrity in fact – as youve watched his many TV episodes on the Discovery Channel.  But for those who don’t know of Les, he originated the entire genre of Survival TV by taking cameras and going to remote locations around the world filming himself surviving in these locations.  He’d document his experience and at the same time teach how to build shelters, start fires, gather indigenous foods, improvise weapons, fashion clothing, etc.  But this is not an Eagle Scout grown up with a camera, Les conceived each episode, researched, narrated, filmed, edited, and even produced the music for each episode.

And we are talking over 70 Survivorman episodes in deserts, the arctic, the ocean, deserted islands, canyons, swamps, rainforests – the list goes on and on AND he’s demonstrating survival unique to each location.  I find this type of television extremely compelling, it is edutainment – education and entertainment together.  By the way, many others find it outstanding as well.  Survivorman is one of the highest rated shows in the history of OLN Canada, the Science Channel US and Discovery Channel US and remains the highest rated repeat show on the Discovery Channel.  Les has won numerous awards including Best Writer (twice) and Best Photographer from the Canadian Screen Awards, and he’s won the Executive Producers Award for Excellence at the Lewiston Film Festival.

But that’s not all, Les is a speaker and a New York Times bestselling author.  He has three books Survive! – Essential Skills and Tactics to Get You Out of Anywhere–Alive!, Will to Live, and Beyond Survivorman .  And he was nominated for Best Travel Writer at the Canadian National Magazine awards.

And if that’s not extraordinary enough, Les is also an accomplished musician.  Not only has Les written all the theme songs for his TV series and scored several independent films, but he’s recorded four CDs.  Les is also revered worldwide for his iconic harmonica playing.  Les’s songwriting style runs eclectic, from art-folk-roots rock to contemporary art rock.

Les is a proud member of the prestigious Explorers Club.  He contributes to dozens of charities and benefits, is an ambassador for Shelterbox, and is an advanced survival trainer for the Canadian Military Armed Forces, as well as he sits on the board of advisors for the Sea Shepherd Conservation Organization.

LXD 019 : Cristina Zenato – Shark Professional & Conservationist

By Tec Clark Leave a Comment

Cristina Zenato

Cristina Zenato – Shark Professional, Cave Explorer and Conservationist

On today’s episode I chat with one of the most influential women underwater. Italian born Cristina Zenato traveled to the Bahamas to take a beginner diving class, and that’s where she fell in love with diving and with the Bahamas. Eventually Cristina became a dive pro. Her credentials include PADI Course Director, NSS-CDS Full Cave Instructor, and TDI Extended Range and Advanced Nitrox with Decompression Procedures Instructor. This helps her explore the many cave systems in the Bahamas – yes there are cave systems in the Bahamas! She even speaks five languages.

But what Cristina is most noted for is her expertise with handling Caribbean Reef Sharks on special shark dives in the Bahamas. She has a special way with sharks, a gift, whereby sharks are so comfortable with her they literally come lay in her lap. Due to this intimacy she has been able to study sharks and assist other researchers in studying shark behavior. And this closeness has even allowed her to remove fishing hooks from their jaws. No wonder Cristina has been inducted into the Women Divers Hall of Fame and the Explorers Club, as well as being a recipient of the Platinum Pro 5000 Award.

LXD018: Guy Harvey – Marine Artist and Conservationist

By Tec Clark Leave a Comment

Guy Harvey

Dr. Guy Harvey – Artist, Scientist, Angler and Conservationist

In this podcast episode of The League of Extraordinary Divers I chat with Guy Harvey.  There is no other artist who is better known than Guy Harvey for underwater images. And, there is no other artist who has made greater contributions to ocean conservation than Guy Harvey.

Guy Harvey is an artist, scientist, angler, conservationist and extraordinary diver. Growing up in Jamaica, Guy spent many hours fishing and diving with his father along the Island’s south coast. He was obsessed with the creatures of the sea and began drawing pictures of the many different fish he observed. From his early inspirations, Guy’s natural gift to recreate marine life has propelled him from Professor of Marine Biology to a Wildlife Artist and Photographer.

In 1985, he depicted Ernest Hemingway’s famous fishing story “The Old Man & the Sea” through a series of 44 original pen and ink drawings and displayed them at an exhibition in Jamaica. Based on the positive response he received at the show, Guy began painting full time and by 1988 was providing custom artwork for use on a variety of products. Guy began to travel the world to gain more knowledge of the habits and activities of marine wildlife. He became an avid scuba diver and skilled underwater photographer. He pioneered a technique of diving and photographing free-swimming billfish. His personal observations made during these diving expeditions have better enabled him to capture the detail in his paintings that contributes to the popularity of his work.

Guy’s artwork can be found in art exhibits, stores, galleries, restaurants and at fishing tournaments. He makes appearances at store openings as well as public appearances for a variety of environmental causes. His passion for the beauty and wonder of the underwater world has driven Dr. Guy Harvey to be a leading conservationist and advocate for the protection of our environment. Guy dedicates much of his talent, time and resources to programs that protect our oceans, fish population and reef systems. The Guy Harvey Research Institute at Nova Southeastern University and The Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation have taken on a leadership role in providing the scientific information necessary to understand and protect the world’s fish resources and biodiversity from continued decline.

LXD 017 : Brandi Mueller – Underwater Photographer and Author

By Tec Clark Leave a Comment

Brandi Mueller

Brandi Mueller – Underwater Photographer and Author of The Airplane Graveyard

In this podcast I chat with Brandi Mueller.  Brandi began her diving career at the age of 15 as a foreign exchange student in New Zealand.  When she went to graduate school in Florida, she longed for the opportunity to travel the world and scuba dive.  Soon she discovered Action Quest and was required to become a diving instructor to get the job.  She did, and the rest is history.

Brandi taught and traveled the British Virgin Islands with Action Quest.  When her gig in the BVI ended, she was hired onto the Kona Aggressor Yacht.  There she learned underwater photography and honed her skills by learning from photo pro’s and guests.  When she returned to her graduate studies – this time in Hawaii – she worked for a dive center and led exotic dive trips through the store.  Eventually, Brandi landed a job captaining a ferry on a US Army base in Kwajalein Atoll.  There she documented an underwater graveyard of over 150 World War II US military aircraft.  As an Ikelite Ambassador and photo pro, Brandi used her photography skills and has just published her first book entitled The Airplane Graveyard: The Forgotten WWII Warbirds of Kwajalein Atoll.

  • Becoming a scuba instructor in college
  • Instructing and traveling the world
  • Photo skills aboard Kona Aggressor
  • Favorite diving locations

10 Reasons Why Every Dive Pro Should Attend the DEMA Show

By Tec Clark Leave a Comment

The DEMA Show is the diving industry’s largest trade show.

The DEMA Show is the diving industry’s largest trade show. The Diving Equipment and Marketing Association (DEMA) held its first trade show in 1977. Today the DEMA Show has grown to host over 600 exhibitors with nearly 10,000 attendees annually. The exhibitors consist of dive equipment manufacturers, travel destinations, apparel wholesalers, dive training agencies, and diving business service providers. Attendees of the DEMA Show are limited to diving industry professionals only, as it is not open to the public or consumers.

For some, the annual pilgrimage is obligatory, come hell or high water they are going to the Show. For others, the DEMA Show is looked at as a drain on financial and time resources. But that could not be further from the truth as the opportunities for growth and development in the diving industry multiply when individuals or dive centers invest in the professional development that exists by attending the DEMA Show each year.

To put this into light, here are my top ten reasons why dive professionals should attend the DEMA Show:

Get away to Orlando, Las Vegas & New Orleans

#10 Location

Get away. No really, get out of your city and go somewhere else. When you escape your city you also escape your routines, your defaults, and your hang-ups. Going to another location allows you to think differently, act differently, and do unique things. This in turn opens up your creative pathways of newness and exploration, which allows you to be primed for learning new things and being open to change. Between Orlando and Las Vegas (and now New Orleans is added starting in 2020) these are great get-away destinations just right for large conventions and tourism.

DEMA Image Resource Center

#9 Resource Centers

Two of the most popular and expertise-intensive areas in diving are photography and technical diving. So the DEMA Show has created areas on the show floor called Resource Centers for both of these areas. The Image Resource Center and the Technical Diving Resource Center are areas where experts of their domains discuss tips and techniques throughout each day of the Show. The Resource Centers are actually located in the midst of several exhibitor booths relating to that specialty area.

Socials and awards parties are a big hit at the DEMA Show

#8 Social Events & Awards Parties

Every night of the DEMA Show is filled with social events. Many of these events are hosted by the major players in the industry and they are open to everyone. They usually have a cash bar and free hors d’oeuvres. Here’s a word of advice – get there early if you want food! Some of the best socials are the ones hosted by SSI, PADI, DAN, DeeperBlue, and WetPixel. Industry awards are also a big thing at the Show. These gatherings are more formal, with full dinners as well. Some of the biggest award parties are hosted by Women Divers Hall of Fame, Academy of Underwater Arts and Sciences, and the biggest award party is the DEMA Awards Party.

DEMA Sponsored Seminars feature business experts in many fields

#7 DEMA Sponsored Seminars

Learning how to succeed in your diving business is a big theme of the DEMA Show. The DEMA Show committee selects professional speakers to provide specific business and career related presentations to attendees. DEMA Sponsored Seminars are divided into tracks to help you quickly and easily find the sessions that are of interest to you and meet your specific needs. These tracks include Marketing, Operations, and Sales.

Industry experts share their knowledge in Exhibitor Sponsored Seminars

#6 Exhibitor Sponsored Seminars

Some of the 600 exhibitors can share more about themselves in one-hour seminars than they can in their booths. So, they put on educational presentations at different points throughout the DEMA Show. These presentations are informative and interactive. Some exhibitors like PADI, NAUI, SSI, and DAN have rented their own rooms in the convention center to offer back-to-back seminars all day, every day of the DEMA Show. Oh, and did you know you can walk away with professional certifications as well? Many companies offer training courses before, during and after the DEMA Show. These include PSI/PCI, DAN, NAUI and a host of equipment manufacturers offer repair technician courses.

Dive travel destinations worldwide exhibit at the DEMA Show

#5 Booking Dive Travel

Traveling to the best diving destinations in the world is the heart and soul of what we do as dive pro’s. Since so many dive centers and independent instructors offer dive travel to their customers, there is no better time and place to gather as much info on diving destinations as at the DEMA Show. From diving liveaboard yachts to land based dive centers, dive travel is represented well at the DEMA Show. Let’s say you want to go to the Florida Keys, you will find dive operators of that region often near each other on the Show floor to make it easy to talk with and compare operators. Then there are huge Travel Pavilions which are entire isles dedicated to a region. The Bahamas Travel Pavilion for example has dozens of dive operators ready to give you info on their diving, hotel, and transportation packages – and near the end of the day you may be serenaded by steal drums and some Bahamas Rum Punch.

Get a look at the newest products in the dive industry

#4 Seeing the Latest Products and Technology

Our industry is always changing and the DEMA Show is the place to showcase what is new and what is coming. In fact, on the Show floor there is the New Products Showcase. Instead of going booth to booth inquiring about what is new, you can conveniently look in display cases to see all the new products and where they are located on the Show floor. For example, last year I got to touch, demo, and drool over the Garmin Descent MK1 dive computer months before it was available to consumers. I got way more information from the exhibiting Garmin expert than I did online.

Meet & learn from top executives of dive training agencies

#3 Connecting with Dive Training Agencies

We all know to be a diver one needs to be certified and there are several dive training agencies in the industry for this. Almost all dive training agencies exhibit at the DEMA Show. You can learn directly from them about standards changes, new products, risk management, and new initiatives. Many of them also offer educational seminars (see #6) to go in depth into these areas. By spending time in the booths with the dive training agencies’ executives, you get a really good sense of the mission and soul of each training agency.

Learn about dive gear from the manufacturers themselves

#2 Connecting with Equipment Manufacturers

Let’s face it, we love the gear! Diving is an equipment-intensive sport so the sales and distribution of diving gear to divers is one of the biggest components of any diving business. The DEMA Show hosts a variety of equipment manufacturers ready to show their gear, talk features, and take orders for dive centers. You get to compare brands and models by walking from one booth to another. It’s also a great opportunity to learn about equipment, their features, and even sales strategies of particular lines.

Meet and learn from other dive industry pro’s just like you

#1 Networking

Whether it is on the DEMA Show floor, in seminars, or at social events you will be networking with the who’s who in the diving industry. From executives of the largest players in the industry down to a divemaster on a dive boat; from diving instructors in your state to half way around the world from you, you will rub elbows with tons of dive industry professionals just like you. They face the same challenges, threats and opportunities as you do. They share what is working and not working in their areas. This ability to connect with other dive pro’s gives you an advantage to return home with new strategies you can implement in your diving profession.

Honorable Mentions:

DEMA Show App – DEMA has created an app to help you enjoy the DEMA Show – and it rocks! You can read about and pick seminars to attend that immediately go to your daily schedule. And you will be reminded where you need to go next along with a map how to get there in the Convention Center. Check out my tutorial on how to use the DEMA Show App.
Demonstration Pool – Wanna hop in the water and try a snorkel mask? Or how about a dive propulsion vehicle? Or how about learning some breath-holding tips from a freediving champion? You can do all of that in the DEMA Demonstration Pool.

As you can see, the DEMA Show is an amazing trade show for our diving industry. And with all these tremendous opportunities to learn and grow in a four-day event, you will be making a wise investment in your professional development.
