033 How to Stay Fit To Dive During Lockdown with The Scuba Fitness Coach

By Tec Clark Leave a Comment

In this episode of The Dive Locker Podcast you will learn what special programs dive pro’s can do to keep fit to dive during COVID-19 lockdown.

Welcome To The Show!

Welcome to the dive locker podcast, the podcast for dive professionals where we bring you the latest in diving industry resources that make you excellent at teaching techniques, risk management and dive business.

Well several weeks of being quarantined indoors is certainly something new to all of us. And with this change comes uncertainty, anxiety and maybe for some, worry about the future. Everyone is commenting on social media about how much more theyre eating and drinking. Alcohol sales in the US jumped up 55% the first week of April amid the COVID-19 lockdown. Wow. Well I too am guilty of these trends. I’ve enjoyed lots of time with my wife and kids, we spend time playing games and playing in the pool – so with that comes eating and drinking. Ive even been on several virtual happy hours toasting my friends on a computer screen.

And then we add to this the sedentary lifestyle. Sitting at a home computer all day, binge watching Netflix, board games – you see the issues? So the question is will we be in shape when the world is green lit to go diving again? I mean diving fitness as a dive pro to teach a class or supervise a dive trip? Our guest today is The Scuba Fitness Coach herself Kristen Fassolas, and she will explain why during this time of quarantine at home, we risk rapid loss of cardio vascular fitness and strength fitness. We also talk about the fitness really needed to perform assists and rescues as dive pro’s. And, I’m going to share with you two at home tools that will dramatically help you with your diet and fitness during this time of quarantine. And one of them is a special offer to you listeners of this podcast only!

Resources to Get Through These Crazy Times and Stay Fit

Okay, so here’s the issue. Some of you will resist getting in shape now because of your need to conduct dive rescues, you may have never actually had to do one, so you’re thinking I’m not too invested in this. Well let me inspire you a different way. Simply think of this. How can you transform yourself RIGHT NOW while at home in lockdown, so that you emerge a better human than before coronavirus? Let me pitch this again, How can you transform yourself RIGHT NOW while at home in lockdown, so that you emerge a better human than before coronavirus?

Here’s what I did. I have pledged to become a freediving instructor. Now I have always had passion for freediving. In the early 2000’s I was even captain of the US Freediving Team. But over the years I didn’t keep developing my passion, my craft. Instead I applauded others from the sideline as they became freediving instructors. I was a great cheerleader but now I want to play. So I created a COVID-19 goal, to become a freediving instructor. This was fueled by my great interview with Ted Harty of Immersion Freediving in episode 30 and taking his online courses. And I realized as soon as we are done with this whole quarantine thing, I want to be in top physical shape to enjoy and be good at my next levels of freediving training. So I began a process of looking into the best diet and exercise apps out there to do at home. I have landed on my top two and they will absolutely transform you.

First up is the FitOn app. I can’t recommend this app enough. It has 4.9 out of 5 stars on 75,000 reviews at the App Store. You get 100’s of workouts, that are professionally produced by outstanding trainers, some are celebrity trainers.

Next up is Primal Blueprint. This is the creation of Mark Sisson a champion endurance athlete who found himself sick, injured and fatigued all the time until he did tons of research on nutrition. This led to one of the top diet and exercise movements in the world.

Now folks in 2015 I went into cardiac a-fib one night, that is Atrial fibrillation and its a quivering or irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia) that can lead to blood clots, stroke, heart failure and other heart-related complications. I realized right then I needed to change my diet, exercise and reduce stress in my life. Sure enough I did the 21 Day Primal Reset program. And folks I’m here to tell you everything that program claims is absolutely true. They hand hold you through a 21-day journey in bettering your nutrition as well as showcasing better ways to “workout”.

Here are some of the things, first we are carb regulated. Which means we have been programed that most of our standard American diet is carbohydrate intensive. Once the body breaks down these highly processed carbs it handles it just like sugar. it stores it for a time to need it. And thus you put on weight in body fat. But if you start removing processed foods, carbs and sugars from your diet you will see remarkable changes. Instead, you are eating proteins and fats and vegetables and fruits and your not starving.

I did it, and I never felt better or looked better, I actually had less body fat that at my prime in college! In the program you’ll learn that even with this diet rich in meat and fat you will reduce your bad cholesterol. I totally didn’t believe that, and then it actually happened. They claim you will improve your sleep, you will think clearer, you will have more energy throughout the day, and won’t crash in the middle of the afternoon, and you’ll look good naked – and Im here to tell you their claims are true. This program works.

So since this is a 21 day program it is the perfect time to do this. I will have links to the program so that you can check it out more. In fact, I love the programs and products so much that I became an affiliate for Primal Blueprint and Primal Kitchen. Because of this no matter what program or products you buy you will get 10% off if you type in the word SCUBAGURU for the promo code on your checkout page.

And remember you’ll get 10 % off. The way I look at it is this. With the amount of money I’m saving in gas alone per week in this household, I can purchase any one of these 21 Day Primal Reset courses AND purchase the subscription for me, my wife and kids, and I’m good financially. Folks this is the time to invest in yourself. It does no good to worry or gripe and complain about things. Take this time to make changes for the better. Be fit, be healthy and be completely prepared for when the green lights go on for us all to return to work.

And again, think about one area you can transform yourself into at this time. What can you do do come out of this professionally stronger than ever. For me, I have dedicated to become a freediving instructor. And I’m going to take you on that journey with me so that you can see how a new professional pursuit can actually make you feel like you are truly living!

032 What Happened to the YMCA Scuba Program?

By Tec Clark Leave a Comment

In this episode of The Dive Locker Podcast you will hear what happened to the YMCA Scuba Program and the emergence of Scuba Educators International.

Welcome To The Show!

Welcome to the dive locker podcast, the podcast for dive professionals where we bring you the latest in diving industry resources that make you excellent at teaching techniques, risk management and dive business.

You know as the former national director of the YMCA Scuba program I get asked by many in the industry what happened to the YMCA scuba Program? And then there’s a ton of pro’s that see my resume and say YMCA had a scuba program? So in this episode I want to tell you the story of YMCA scuba, how it started, where it ended and where it is today.

Resources to Get Through These Crazy Times

But first what’s in the news regarding coronavirus and our industry. Again so many are stepping up with webinars to help their members at this time.

PADI is putting on a webinar series on diving business as well as hosting virtual member forums. In fact they have launched a whole Professional Resource Hub for PADI pro’s.

And DEMA is putting on a webinar on CARES Act Paycheck Protection Program with Tom Ingram. Navigating the SBA’s Economic Injury Disaster Loans & Emergency Economic Injury Grants

Earlier this week I took the DAN online learning course on Ears and Diving. It was really good, very insightful and best is I learned many things. You see as pro’s we can never stop learning. I will be a better instructor because of taking that one hour course.

To keep up with the coronavirus related items in the industry subscribe to both Dive News Wire and DeeperBlue. Check these out as I will have the link to all of them on our show notes page at ScubaGuru.com

Upcoming Episode on Fitness to Dive

And finally a heads up, I’ve heard from plenty of you that your exercise is down and your eating and drinking is up. I right there with you. But I began a couple weeks back to look into changing my health and fitness while at home. So I began researching fitness apps and diet programs, meals, you name it. So next week we are going to talk about some amazing new strategies at this time of lockdown to stay in fitness to dive shape. Shoutout to Kirk Krack and Mandy Rae they’ve been posting their family workouts on Facebook. You see we need to be different now. These are different times and like it or not, we need new routines.

YMCA Scuba Program & SEI

So, the YMCA had a scuba program? Yes, and Im proud to say I was one of the estimated 800,000 divers that received a YMCA certification. The YMCA scuba program was the first national scuba training program in the country being founded in 1959. And in 2008 the YMCA of the USA suspended the program and certification issuance. But, the legacy lives on in the scuba training agency called SEI Scuba Educators International. So, we will hear from Tom Leaird who was the Advisory Committee chairman of YMCA Scuba when YMCA of the USA closed its doors, then he brought it over and founded a new agency as a legacy agency of the YMCA Scuba program.

The New Diver Medical Screening Questionnaire with Dr. Nick Bird

By Tec Clark Leave a Comment

In this episode of The Dive Locker Podcast you will hear from Dr. Nick Bird about the new diver medical screening questionnaire as well as Coronavirus’ possible effects on fitness to dive.

Welcome To The Show!

Welcome to the dive locker podcast, the podcast for dive professionals where we bring you the latest in diving industry resources that make you excellent at teaching techniques, risk management and dive business.

Hello dive pro’s welcome to another episode of the dive locker podcast during what is frankly the most significant health crisis in modern history.  First, thank you for hanging in there.  It is my hope that you can shed some of the emotional and intellectual burdens that you are dealing with and just for these 40 or so minutes, relax and simply focus on a conversation between two people.  Picture yourself with us and just soak in the information.

Resources to Get Through These Crazy Times

People and companies are really stepping up to make this time a little more tolerable.  I want to highlight some resources for you.  Kudos to the dive training agencies that are sharing information to help their members and retailers.  Sage Dalton with SSI put on a great webinar for SSI pro’s, where he really showcased how nimble the SSI digital education platform is.  They were able to make immediate changes for their pro’s to help engage students and customers at this time.

Shout out to Roger Joselyn with PADI for hosting a PADI webinar on how to adjust your training techniques – again highlighting customer contact and elearning options.  And PADI is putting on a webinar series on diving business as well as hosting virtual member forums.

And DEMA is putting on a webinar on CARES Act Paycheck Protection Program with Tom Ingram. Another area of training resources comes from our industry legend Dan Orr who is offering his webinar called Does Diving Have a Retirement Age?

Also, world champion freediver Stig Severinsen is making his famous Breathology book free as well as an accompanying online course.  This is great for relaxation and combating stress.  He even teaches that proper daily breathing techniques improve your immune system.

Speaking of freediving there’s Immersion Freediving’s online courses that I discussed last week.

And finally, I’m keeping my staff going with virtual in service training, one of the things we are doing is assigning one of the DAN online learning courses each week to our instructors and divemasters on staff, and we are paying them to take those courses, just as if it was on the clock in service training.  I’m sure Patty Seery and Bil Ziefle are happy to hear that.  But seriously everyone, there are so many resources out there for you to better yourself as a dive professional.

Upcoming Episode on Fitness to Dive

So that’s it for Coronavirus items. Actually one more thing, I’m actually previewing fitness and exercise apps to recommend to you for an upcoming episode. I don’t know about you, but I’m not doing such a great job keeping fit these days. My gym is closed, I can’t do my workouts in the park anymore. So everything has to be at home or in my neighborhood. And, not eating like i used to, and yeah, I might be doing more happy hours now that the commute from my home office to my home bar is ten steps away. No 40 minute commute home! So I’m going to share the programs and apps that I have been trying in an upcoming episode so that when its time to dive again, we can all be in shape.

Interview with Dr. Nick Bird

On today’s episode you’re going to hear about the new diver medical screening form that is coming out. A team of diving physicians, headed up by our guest Dr Nick Bird, assembled two years ago to revise this document that was long overdue for revision. Dr Bird talks about the many changes that have taken place in this soon to be released revision and I even talk with Dr. Bird about the impact of the Coronavirus on future medical screenings. You’ll want to hear that. Dr. Nick Bird was the Chief Medical Officer and CEO of Divers Alert Network, he was also the Regional Medical Director at Duke University, and currently he is the President of the UHMS Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society.

Why Dive Pro’s Should Take Freediving Courses

By Tec Clark Leave a Comment

In this episode of The Dive Locker Podcast freediving expert Ted Harty discusses why taking a freediving course will benefit all diving professionals.

Welcome To The Show!

Welcome to the dive locker podcast, the podcast for dive professionals where we bring you the latest in diving industry resources that make you excellent at teaching techniques, risk management and dive business.

Our lives have certainly changed. Truly, everything is different in our day to day happenings. In once sense it is unsettling and disruptive and on the other hand I’m connecting with my family more. One day I’m shaken by this virus and what it could do it i or a loved one or friend gets it, and the next day I’m like so what if I get it, Im not a high risk health individual. One day you hear wear masks and the next day you hear don’t wear masks. One day I think how are we going to get through this financially, and the next day I think about all the things I want to do when we are not homebound anymore and how I believe the economy will strongly bounce back. Are you feeling these same opposite feelings? It’s pretty crazy.

Resources to Get Through These Crazy Times

Well, let me point you to some resources that may help this time in our lives. First, our buddy Stephan Wheelan at DeeperBlue has created an entire coronavirus information area on deeperblue.com. It mostly relates to diving related coronavirus articles, but there are good general information pieces there as well. Well done Stephan. Also, DEMA is reporting on the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act also known as the CARES act to offer assistance to US Small business. This is great news. And DEMA has circulated the Small Business Owners Guide to the CARES Act so that you can apply for these funds. This 11 page document covers so many different business needs, you really need to take a look at it. Check it out at DEMA.org .

Also, if you want some mental health tips to keep your sanity at this time, my wife Dr Heather Clark is a clinical psychologist and she has just come out with a YouTube video series called Coping with Coronavirus. Here she gives a two-three minute tip per video on how to cope with these challenging times.

And finally, speaking of YouTube is the number one trending video in the world right now. It is called Some Good News with John Krasinski – you may remember him from the hit show The Office, well he just released an organic home-grown YouTube channel dedicated to sharing only good stories seen on social media around the world. It is awesome. Yep, I had some tears going on, because of the great stuff he highlighted. Plus, the guy is hilarious too. So check out Some Good News with John Krasinski – you’ll love it, and you’re welcome.

So I’m going to share the programs and apps that I have been trying in an upcoming episode so that when its time to dive again, we can all be in shape.

Interview with Ted Harty

Today lets focus an area near and dear to my heart and that is freediving. But the specific thing we’re sharing with you is how freediving can make you a better dive professional. I have with me my friend and freediving expert Ted Harty with Immersion Freediving and we discuss all the ways that you taking a freediving class will help you be a better divemaster or instructor. Ted began his professional underwater career as a Scuba Instructor for PADI,NAUI, and SSI in 2005. In 2008 he took his first freediving class with Performance Freediving International. After that course on his days off he didn’t want to go scuba diving he wanted to go freediving, and realized his passion was freediving. In 2009 Ted took PFI’s first official Instructor program, and immediately started working for PFI helping Kirk Krack and Mandy Rae-Kruckshank teach courses all across the USA.

Ted went to his first freediving competition in 2009 as an overweight out of shape scuba instructor and progressed from 80-90ft freediver to 177ft in 3 weeks. After the experience he wondered what he could do if he actually started training. Since that time he broke a USA Freediving record in 2011, won 3 freediving competitions, was selected to be the co-captain of the USA Freediving team in 2012, and his deepest dive is 279ft. Isn’t that awesome. And Ted also has a series of online courses – perfect for this time of us staying at home. Ted has also given a special promotion to The Dive Locker nation. You’re gonna like this, and in case you’re wondering we recorded this a few weeks ago prior to stay at home orders. So here we go pro’s time to change it up and hold your breath.

Online Freediving Courses Offer

Very cool stuff, thanks Ted for a great interview and thanks for your offer. Folks go to Ted’s Immersion Freediving Online Courses that Ted talked about and you’ll get 10% off any online course as a listener to this podcast. Simply enter tecclark (all one word) in the coupon code on your checkout screen to get 10% off. That’s really great, thanks again Ted.
