Hey everyone it’s great to be with you for our 50th episode! Today we talk about the loss of legendary diving industry veteran Jon Coon. We also hit up scuba news such as SSI’s free crossovers, PADI’s Straight Talk with Drew Richardson and DEMA’s virtual conference.

Then we get into a great way to enhance your virtual or in person meetings and classes – it’s called Kahoot! This creates quizzes that are played like trivia questions with points assessed and other bells and whistles. These are truly great for learning professional and personal details. And they are a ton of fun.

049 Tank Valve: Air All On Or A Quarter Turn Closed?

By Tec Clark Leave a Comment

In this episode of The Dive Locker Podcast I discuss an age old debate about tank valves, should the air be all on or a quarter turn closed?

Welcome To The Show!

Welcome to The Dive Locker Podcast, the podcast for dive professionals where we bring you the latest in diving industry resources that make you excellent at teaching techniques, risk management and dive business.

Hey everyone it’s great to be with you today on another episode of The Dive Locker! Okay, we are going to hit a hot button debate item today. Tank valves. Do we open up the valve all the way or do we turn it a quarter turn back? The answer my friends is a definitively AIR ALL ON. And I’m going to prove it to you. This past weekend I actually filmed a video segment for my Beyond The Standard vlog with my old technique of a quarter turn closed. Well I proved why people die from this technique. This is why as an old school instructor who had been doing this quarter turn closed for about 25 years, gave this up a few years ago, because it can be dangerous. I will fully explain this issue in this episode.

047 Balancing Fun and Risk with Whitewater River Guide Bodie Beitz

By Tec Clark Leave a Comment

In this episode of The Dive Locker Podcast I speak with ACE Adventure Resort Whitewater River Guide Bodie Beitz on how to balance fun and risk in outdoor recreation.

Last week we discussed what makes a strong workplace culture and we profiled ACE Adventure Resort in West Virginia. As you know if you listened to the last episode, my family and I went whitewater rafting down the lower New River and we had an amazing time. But what stood out was the strong culture that I witnessed there. A culture of both fun and safety.

Well today you’re in for a treat as I chat with a senior member of the ACE Adventure Resort whitewater river guides Bodie Beitz. I specifically wanted him to come on the show to discuss many of the great things I saw him and his team do on our trip, and how some of these techniques actually translate quite well to diving. There is a lot of good stuff here.

Items In This Episode

  • Well Balanced Briefings
  • Positive Reinforcement
  • Educating About Risk
  • “Sphere of Awareness”

046 What Makes A Strong Workplace Culture?

By Tec Clark Leave a Comment

In this episode of The Dive Locker Podcast I highlight ACE Adventure Resort, a whitewater rafting company, to point out the features of a strong workplace culture.

Welcome To The Show!

Welcome to The Dive Locker Podcast, the podcast for dive professionals where we bring you the latest in diving industry resources that make you excellent at teaching techniques, risk management and dive business.

Again today I join you from the road. I’m all jacked-up on decaf coffee and nature. Yes, I’m on an epic road trip in West Virginia and North Carolina. Why, because I can’t get enough of nature. It is healthy to leave the ocean once and a while an get to the mountains.

Now whether my family and I hike or bike, it has to involve water somehow. We’re always searching for activities that take us into rivers, streams and lakes while we’re in the mountains. And one of our favorite things to do is whitewater rafting. I’ve been doing it since I was a kid with my parents, and my wife and I have been taking our kids since they were really young. So this year we went big in West Virginia with one of my favorite adventure outfitters ACE Adventure Resort.

And that is the inspiration of this episode. Yes, we had a blast and those of you who are my personal Facebook friends have seen our awesome whitewater photos. But I’m talking about the culture. The workplace culture of ACE was strong and solid. They sold the whitewater lifestyle, and did it with a strong workplace culture.

That is what I want to share with you today, because whitewater rafting is quite similar to scuba diving. They are both outdoor adventures, that are super fun, but have some healthy risks. They both rely on technology and techniques to keep people alive in these hazardous environments.

So today we are going to address what makes a strong workplace culture.

Items In This Episode
