061 Physical Stressors: The Most Overlooked Area in Diving

By Tec Clark Leave a Comment

In this episode of The Dive Locker Podcast we look at how physical stressors lead to many critical issues when diving.

Welcome To The Show!

Welcome to The Dive Locker Podcast, the podcast for dive professionals where we bring you the latest in diving industry resources that make you excellent at teaching techniques, risk management and dive business.

Last week we discussed psychological stress and how it plays a part in learning and teaching. But there is an area of stress that is far more overlooked. And that is physical stressors.

Your training agency materials talk more about mental stress than physical stress. But I will prove to you how the pathology of most diving accidents stem from physical stressors. This starts a chain reaction of physiological changes and they can trigger mental stressors as well.

This will change the way you teach Rescue Diver, the way you teach Divemaster and this will change you as a Divemaster and/or instructor. This one episode is worth an entire year of being a patron of this podcast – it has that much value!

060 Please Leave Your Stress At The Door

By Tec Clark Leave a Comment

In this episode of The Dive Locker Podcast we look at how to leave daily stress behind and focus on training.

Welcome To The Show!

Welcome to The Dive Locker Podcast, the podcast for dive professionals where we bring you the latest in diving industry resources that make you excellent at teaching techniques, risk management and dive business.

Thanks for being with me today! In this episode we are going over the following concept to share with our instructor staff and students. This is what I like to put up in the entryways to classrooms and pools:

Please leave your stress at the door. Come inside, be engaged, be refreshed, focus on diving. When you leave, you can pick up your stress on the way out, and your stress will be lighter.

This concept is vitally important in this day in age of major life stressors.

059 The Importance of The Swim Test for Open Water Diver Courses

By Tec Clark Leave a Comment

In this episode of The Dive Locker Podcast we uncover the importance of the swim test during Open Water Diver courses.

Welcome To The Show!

Welcome to The Dive Locker Podcast, the podcast for dive professionals where we bring you the latest in diving industry resources that make you excellent at teaching techniques, risk management and dive business.

Thanks for being with me today! Well in this episode we are gonna talk about the importance of the swim test for open water diver courses. RSTC says one thing, the agencies say something else. Then you’ve got variations of the test to consider as well as rules that can be, and are being, violated because instructors are letting them. There’s some great items to discuss, clarify and bring to light. Im also going to discuss tips for administering the swim test to make it as effective as possible.

Now we all know you need to be able to swim to be a certified diver, right? But what does “able to swim” mean? What is the ability needed and what should be measured? And by the way we are only addressing open water diver in this episode, the leadership swim tests could be a whole different episode. First, let’s break down what it is and what it isn’t. It’s not to measure fitness, endurance or technique. Although some of those might be on display, it’s not what we’re focused on. Instead the swim test is to demonstrate aquatic comfort and proficiency in the ability to keep the airway unobstructed in water. This is done while moving or swimming, and not moving, stationary. Strokes used and how fast one swims are also not measured directly. Yet indirectly they do give us a snapshot of big picture aquatic abilities.

Agency Swim Test Standards

So lets look at what our agencies using as standards for this test. And special thanks my colleagues for providing me with their standards and rationale, thanks to Sage Dalton with SSI, Steve Lewis with RAID, Derik Crotts with PSS, Ben Brown with SEI, Kris with NAUI and Jarrod Jablonski with GUE.

First here is what the RSTC standard states:
Physical Conditioning and Watermanship Evaluation. The student shalleffectively demonstrate basic watermanship ability by performing, to an instructor, the watermanship evaluation required by a training organization. This watermanship evaluation shall include either: a) continuous 200 yard (183 metre) surface distance swim and a 10 minute survival swim/float without the use of mask, fins, snorkel or of other swimming aids. b) 300 yard swim using mask, fins and snorkel, and a 10 minute survival swim/float without mask, fins, snorkel or other swimming aid. If an exposure suit is used, the wearer must be neutrally buoyant at the surface.

Swim Test Standards

  • PADI
  • SSI
  • RAID
  • PSS
  • SEI
  • GUE
  • NAUI

Items In This Episode

  • What to look for in the swim test?
  • How to conduct the swim test?
  • How do instructors do the swim test wrong?

LXD 039 : Richie Kohler – Shipwreck Explorer, Filmmaker and Author

By Tec Clark Leave a Comment

ScubaGuru - Richie Kohler

Richie Kohler – Iconic Wreck Explorer, Filmmaker and Author

Hey everyone welcome to another episode of the League of Extraordinary Divers. It’s great to have you here today.

So when you say the name Richie Kohler one may immediately think of wreck diving in the Northeast, or German U boats or his long time buddy John Chatterton, or for many of you the New York Times bestselling book he’s featured in Shadow Divers. Well, that’s because Richie is a key iconic figure in all of those circles.

Richie Kohler is a filmmaker, author and explorer whose diving experiences began in the waters surrounding Brooklyn NY, but whose passion for diving and exploring shipwrecks has taken him to all corners of the globe. And, as a founding member of the NY based group the “Atlantic Wreck Divers” Kohler has spent the last 40 years exploring and identifying lost shipwrecks. Those exploits have been documented in newspapers, magazines, documentary films and numerous books. Kohler holds nearly every diving qualification and has certified scores of technical divers in advanced diving techniques and has led shipwreck and technical diving expeditions internationally.

In 1992 his work (with diving partner John Chatterton) to identify a previously unknown German U-boat was the focus of an award-winning NOVA documentary, “Hitler’s Lost Sub.” And, that six-year effort was the subject of several television documentaries and a best-selling book, Shadow Divers by Robert Kurson, a New York Times bestseller. The success of that program launched his career in underwater filmmaking. Kohler co-hosted and produced fifty-six episodes of the popular History Channel program “Deep Sea Detectives” that attracted millions of viewers worldwide. The educational program focused on underwater mysteries in nearly every aquatic environment and inspired many to discover diving and explore the undersea world.

Kohler has produced numerous other television programs detailing his explorations on some of the most famous shipwrecks in the world, including the Andrea Doria, RMS Titanic, and the HMHS Britannic. Kohler has worked on film projects for Paramount Pictures, CBS, PBS/NOVA, National Geographic, Discovery Channel, Universal Studios and most recently Kohler joined legendary underwater explorer Dr. Bob Ballard aboard his research ship, EV Nautilus, documenting deep water shipwrecks in the Gulf of Mexico.

Kohler’s work is often focused on the human aspect of shipwreck tragedies and he has prioritized reaching out to the survivors and families answering questions and providing closure on wrecks such as the U-215, U-869, USS Murphy, USS Lagarto and the PC 566. Most recently his work in correcting historical wrongs culminated in an award ceremony at the Pentagon in which the Secretary of the Navy posthumously awarded the Legion of Merit with Valor to a World War II Captain.

A Fellow in the Explorer’s Club, Kohler continues to lead expeditions in search of lost ships and the mysteries they hold. Also, he has written dozens of articles about shipwrecks, deep diving and diver safety and in 2016 published his first book, Mystery of the Last Olympian, that details his decade of work on Titanic’s sister ship HMHS Britannic.

Recently Kohler hosted on a new series of diving-centered programing, Dark Waters with Richie Kohler. This programing will promote the fragile underwater environment, showcasing the treasures it holds to a new generation of underwater explorers.

Richie Kohler represents a unique sector of diving professionals with significant contributions to exploration and historical preservation of the ocean’s wreck resources.

058 My Top 7 Ice Breakers For Student Bonding

By Tec Clark Leave a Comment

In this episode of The Dive Locker Podcast we learn some great ice breakers that build trust, communication and likability among students in your classes.

Welcome To The Show!

Welcome to The Dive Locker Podcast, the podcast for dive professionals where we bring you the latest in diving industry resources that make you excellent at teaching techniques, risk management and dive business.

A quick way to get to know your students and for them to get to know each other is by doing ice breakers. It doesn’t matter what environment you’re in, if you have a group of people that don’t know each other this is a fun and lighthearted way to connect each other.

So why do them? Well research has shown that even simple icebreakers are powerful in developing trust and likability among participants. Research also shows that icebreakers stimulate communications by making people comfortable to speak up. It also improves teamwork which is vital for buddy teams in your classes. For all of these reasons icebreakers should be a legitimate part of your teaching.

We want icebreakers to be effective so here are ten rules to keep in mind when performing ice breakers. These rules are courtesy of quizbreaker.com:

Keep it short
Keep it light
Involve everyone
Keep it encouraging
Keep it fun
Make it upbeat
Keep it moving
Keep it simple
Encourage everyone
Keep doing it!

So here are my top 7 ice breakers:

  1. Two Truths and a Lie
  2. Scuba Tic Tac Toe
  3. Group Map
  4. Jenga
  5. The Reporter
  6. Bucket List
  7. Beach Ball *my favorite!
