069 Write Your New Chapter in 2021

By Tec Clark Leave a Comment

In this episode of The Dive Locker Podcast we embrace the challenge of writing a new chapter in your life story for 2021.

Welcome To The Show!

Welcome to The Dive Locker Podcast, the podcast for dive professionals where we bring you the latest in diving industry resources that make you excellent at teaching techniques, risk management and dive business.

Today’s episode is short and sweet. Here we are the last week of 2020. And what a year it’s been. Of course we’re all hearing lots of sentiments like “Thank goodness it’s over. Good riddance, 2020. Worst year ever.”

The year has certainly been difficult for everyone in different ways. And all the feelings we have felt – being angry, sad, disappointed – they’re all valid. So this would be the point where I’m supposed to tell you to reflect on the happy moments, and the silver linings of 2020. Eh, I could do that but it is pretty cliched right now frankly.

Write Your New Life Chapter

Instead, I want you to do something. I want you to pretend you’re an author and 2020 was a chapter in your book of life. I know it sounds hokey but indulge me here. If you were writing a narrative or a novel of your life what point in the storyline was 2020? Now in most fictional novels and movies there is a structure to a storyline. It usually involves a hero who is the main character, the hero has an issue or problem to overcome, the hero meets someone to help them with a solution, and the hero wins in the end.

In that overarching life narrative and storyline where are you right now? What was 2020 in your narrative? No matter what your story looks like I want to challenge to write your next chapter. Make 2021 your next chapter. Make the problem to overcome your past, and this next chapter is the change that changes the trajectory of your storyline.

I’ll tell you why this is on my heart right now. This week I experienced three instances of others who are changing their storyline narratives for 2021 and it was powerfully inspiring.

A New Career

First the day after Christmas I taught a DAN Diving Emergency Management Provider Instructor course at Sea Experience here in Fort Lauderdale. Now the three men that I taught – David, Nick and Ryan – were all three ex-military and they just had completed their IDC. I spent two days with them and seeing the unfolding of new careers for each of them was really inspiring. They had excitement for their future and what this new career as a diving pro had in store for them. They were going to Sea Experience and being taught by outstanding trainers such as Colin Taylor, Bill Cole and Alex Brylske. And they are literally putting their military days behind them and writing their new life chapters.

A New Education

The second instance was yesterday I had the pleasure of taking a young lady named Rileigh and her mom on a tour of our Academic Diving Program at Nova Southeastern University. This young lady is from Arizona and wants to study marine biology. But one of their top reasons for touring NSU was our Academic Diving Program. In my time with them I saw the excitement for both of them as they prepare a new chapter in both of their lives. This excitement was palpable as we explored the daughters options and many opportunities to be a marine biologist and a dive pro. At one point they were so giddy and excited that the mother actually teared up. Wow, that is powerful.

A New Book

And speaking of Alex Brylske, the third powerful occurrence of someone rewriting their story and starting a new chapter is Dr. Alex Brylske. I’ve mentioned before that he is a mentor of mine and recently he gave me the honor of previewing his new book. As I have been doing that, I can say this is his best work ever! And his new book is pivotal, is a true game changer, it is that good. And this will change his story, his narrative, his life. Not only am I excited about it, but deep down I know he is too. How cool is it to say, my book is coming out in 2021. You see, a new chapter.

Hear me out. Along with whatever New Years resolutions you have in mind, think bigger. Think about changing your storyline. What can you do to write a completely new chapter in your life? What plot twist can you create that is provocative. Be different, be creative, take a risk, get uncomfortable. Think about the three examples I just gave you. For the guys becoming instructors at Sea Experience, for Rileigh and her mom deciding where she will go to college and for Alex writing his new book – they all took risk, they all got creative, they all got uncomfortable – but they all are focused on a goal. And those goals they each possess will be new chapters in their life stories.

My friends write your new chapter. Find a guide to take you and coach you on that new journey. Create the plot twist that puts 2020 in the dust, and makes 2021 epically new.

068 The Stories of Diving Industry Legends

By Tec Clark Leave a Comment

In this episode of The Dive Locker Podcast we point to the stories of legends in the diving industry.

Welcome To The Show!

Welcome to The Dive Locker Podcast, the podcast for dive professionals where we bring you the latest in diving industry resources that make you excellent at teaching techniques, risk management and dive business.

Well it’s the Holidays. This is the week of Christmas and Hanukkah and it also happens to be the day before my birthday. Yes, December 24th I turn 53 years old. Wow, that’s a high number. But at this age I do a lot of reflecting on the past. The past through our life experiences is what shapes us. And I like to honor that, both the good and the bad of it.

I guess this sentimental side of me is also why I have another podcast called The League of Extraordinary Divers. We are approaching our 50th guest. All of which are some of the top names in our industry along with not so well known names, I call them the young guns. But all of them are legends in our industry, because they’ve done legendary things in diving. So today, in honor of my birthday, I want to share with you some of the legends in our industry, and point you to some of their amazing stories.

LXD 041 : Ian Koblick – Legendary Aquanaut

By Tec Clark Leave a Comment

Ian Koblick

Ian Koblick – Legendary Aquanaut & Ocean Educator

Hey everyone welcome to another episode of the League of Extraordinary Divers. It’s great to have you here today.

Have you ever fantasized about living underwater. Of course you have! I do too. You see these images have been set in our mind mostly through television and movies – James Bond movies like Moonraker, SeaLab 2020 cartoon, 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, Jacques Cousteau. Well today’s guest was one of the first aquanauts – those who not only worked underwater, but they lived underwater.

Ian Koblick has pioneered ocean exploration since the 1960’s, and for the past five decades has developed built and operated ocean and environmental education and research facilities in the Caribbean, Mediterranean and Florida. He operated and managed for 3 years a 150foot research vessels which was donated to his research and education Foundation.

La Chalupa

He was one of the nation’s first aquanauts, after serving as manager and aquanaut in the Tektite undersea programs. In 1972 he designed and operated, “La Chalupa”, the most advanced undersea lab in the world. He and a partner converted it to Jules’ Undersea Lodge, the world’s only undersea hotel, operating since 1986 at the Marine Resources Development Foundation environmental education center in Key Largo, Florida. The Foundation houses and educates more than 4,000 students a year for the past 35 years. Ian created the foundation and has served as president for 50 years.

Ian is a recognized authority on marine resource planning and has consulted on an international level in Japan, Panama, Vietnam, Brazil, Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Malta, Italy, Sicily, Croatia, Spain and served the Governor of the Virgin Islands for two years as Special Assistant for Undersea Programs. He co-authored, Living and Working in the Sea, a book on the history of saturation diving and underwater habitats. He was a Consulting Editor of the 2nd edition of the NOAA Diving Manual.

Ian is a founding Director of Aurora Trust Foundation, which was formed to advance the world’s understanding of the ocean environment, and its marine cultural heritage He managed and operated its 85 foot research vessel in the Mediterranean, and co-founded Deep Blue Surveys, a commercial marine company that operated a full suite of remote survey instruments, integrated navigation, and data collection software from its survey vessel based in Malta.

067 How To Apply The Four Trends In Specialty Sport Retailing With Doug McNeese

By Tec Clark Leave a Comment

In this episode of The Dive Locker Podcast we learn how to apply the four trends in specialty sport retailing with Doug McNeese.

Welcome To The Show!

Welcome to The Dive Locker Podcast, the podcast for dive professionals where we bring you the latest in diving industry resources that make you excellent at teaching techniques, risk management and dive business.

In episode 62 of The Dive Locker we had a chat with Doug McNeese about the four trends in Specialty Sport Retailing. If you heard that episode you’ll remember those trends were Personalization, Cross Channel Merchandising, the Customer Experience and finally Inventory. In that episode Doug really introduced these concepts and the bigger picture of what they mean.

But in today’s episode Doug brings specifics, details and examples of how you can embrace these trends and capitalize on them. And like I said last time, it does not matter what level of dive professional you are or what business model you follow. Whether an independent instructor all the way to owning your own dive center, at some point you’ll retail your services and products.

Who Is Doug McNeese?

Doug is President of Scuba Schools International (SSI)’s International Business Development where he travels the world educating dive centers on how to be more successful in their businesses. He was raised working in his father’s dive center, and he eventually bought it from him. It’s called simply, The Dive Shop.

Doug went on to purchase the National Association of Scuba Diving Schools (NASDS). He made remarkable improvements to NASDS. Then saw the opportunity to merge with SSI and nearly a decade later he purchased SSI. And most recently he sold SSI to the HEAD Group where it is flourishing and he is still leading professionals with his secrets to success learned from his early days.

Doug is highly respected in the diving industry and he won the DEMA Reaching out award in 2017. And as you’ll hear he loves to give back to the industry and he has done this through his efforts with both the Platinum Pro Foundation and Sea of Change Foundation.

066 Master Your Domain Part 3: The Open Water

By Tec Clark Leave a Comment

In this episode of The Dive Locker Podcast we look at how to be a master of your domain in the open water environment.

Welcome To The Show!

Welcome to The Dive Locker Podcast, the podcast for dive professionals where we bring you the latest in diving industry resources that make you excellent at teaching techniques, risk management and dive business.

Well, today we continue a three part series on mastery of domain. Again Mastery of Domain is an instructional concept that’s all about one’s command and control of an environment. And in diving instruction we have three unique environments that we must master and be in control of – they are the classroom, the pool or confined water, and the open water.

And today we’re going to look at how you can absolutely be a master of your open water domain. I would like for you to consider something. Have you ever had a job where you were assigned an office? Many of you have and I have too. But think about how you were uncomfortable with this new environment at first. Perhaps it’s the furniture layout or where your phone is located or where your computer monitor is positioned. Soon you’re moving things around and putting decorations on the walls and it has become a comfortable environment.

Well guess what? Your office as a dive pro is the open water environment. Whether it’s the ocean, a lake, a river, a quarry, a spring, a sinkhole, even an aquarium, you must have enough mastery of that environment to be as calm and settled in as your office. In this episode I’m gonna share some great strategies for making the open water a comfortable domain in which you teach and supervise others.
