089 Why The Common Dive Flag Is Not Good Enough With Robert Carmichael

By Tec Clark Leave a Comment

In this episode of The Dive Locker Podcast we discuss why the common diver down flag is not good enough.

Welcome To The Show!

Welcome to The Dive Locker Podcast, the podcast for dive professionals where we bring you the latest in diving industry resources that make you excellent at teaching techniques, risk management and dive business.

The U.S. Coast Guard Boating Safety Resource Center reports that from 2005 to 2013 boat-propeller strikes caused 636 injuries and 38 deaths of people engaged in water activities (boating, water skiing, swimming, snorkeling, diving, tubing, etc.); 442 of these injuries and 29 of these deaths were caused by a person being struck by a vessel.

Within the Asia-Pacific, DAN World has reports of 31 known scuba/snorkeling fatalities between 2009 and 2018 resulting from boat strike/propeller fatalities; however, this figure is likely to be significantly higher as not all cases are reported for incidents occurring within our region.

With divers this is significant and there are laws on the books for both divers and boaters requiring the use of a dive flag. Now there are all kinds of technical specifications about the colors pattern, rigidity, height, and dimensions. But here’s the problem – if a boat is traveling in the same direction as the wind – whether with it or against it, the flag is not visible. It’s just a stick on a float. And even if its not about the wind direction, other factors such as the sea state and glare of the sun reflecting off the water, or rain or fog, can all affect dive flag visibility.

The Need For 360 Degree Dive Flags/Buoys

For this reason there is a new push to create a three dimensional dive flag. Now in 2014 it was passed into law that 3 d flags and buoys would be allowed. But recently due to a tragic boat strike on a freediver on Thanksgiving Day of 2019 there has become a greater awareness of the need for a better diver down flag.

So, today I have invited Robert Carmichael CEO of Brownies Marine Group to have have a discussion on this topic since his company engineered the Brownies 3D Buoy. In it we talk about the false sense of security of the common dive flag and the need for improvement. But don’t think this is an infomercial for the Brownies 3D Buoy, Robert is quick to point out that if new legislation comes down the pike for a better dive flag all industry stakeholders must get together to design something for everyone.

You’ll see he’s not pushing his product, he’s pushing the need for a better dive flag and law. Now me on the other hand, I’m actually unashamedly pushing his product because Ive used it and am totally converted on it. And I will tell you all the reasons why.

088 Cardiac Events In Diving With Dr. Douglas Ebersole

By Tec Clark Leave a Comment

In this episode of The Dive Locker Podcast we discuss the issues of cardiac events in diving with Dr. Douglas Ebersole.

Welcome To The Show!

Welcome to The Dive Locker Podcast, the podcast for dive professionals where we bring you the latest in diving industry resources that make you excellent at teaching techniques, risk management and dive business.

In my dive classes, especially in Rescue Diver and Divemaster, I teach about two important statistics regarding causes of death in diving. These are supported by Divers Alert Network and they come in two categories – operational and medical. Operationally the number one reason divers die is attributed to running out of gas/air supply. And medically, the number one reasons divers die is attributed to cardiac events.

Cardiac events in diving are something we as dive professionals really need to be aware of. Because there really are things you can do to mitigate the risk of cardiac event happening on your dives or in your classes. And if you do experience a student or a diver with a cardiac event, how you respond also matters. So to discuss this important topic I invited Dr. Douglas Ebersole onto this episode.

Doug is a cardiologist and Director of the Structural Heart Program at Lakeland Regional Health in Lakeland, Florida. Not only does he have a vast medical background that includes numerous high ranking positions in cardiology, specialized credentials in cardiac care, and numerous presentations and publications on the topic, but he also has a vast background as a dive professional.

Doug is a multi-agency certified instructor and instructor trainer. And he specializes in technical diving mostly in the area of rebreather instruction. He has numerous articles in many diving publications as well dozens of webinars regarding medical issues and diving.

087 The Economics of Being a Diving Instructor Part 1

By Tec Clark Leave a Comment

In this episode of The Dive Locker Podcast we discuss the economics of being a dive instructor with Darcy Kieran.

Welcome To The Show!

Welcome to The Dive Locker Podcast, the podcast for dive professionals where we bring you the latest in diving industry resources that make you excellent at teaching techniques, risk management and dive business.

So why do we do what we do? Why are we dive professionals? Well, we’ve heard the answer again and again. It’s not about the money, it’s about the lifestyle. Although that may be a true statement for many, there is a bottom line to this lifestyle. It involves training, equipment, annual membership dues and insurance. And then what about if we’re so passionate about diving that we feel being a dive pro should be what we do full time?

You see this is where the passion for the profession collides with the costs of being a professional. So, naturally we want to be in a position where we can do this job we love, but we also would like to eat and live indoors! That’s where the economics of being a dive pro kick in, and this is an area of extreme passion for my friend and industry colleague Darcy Kieran.

Darcy is the founder of the Business of Diving Institute and he is conducting a large-scale industry-wide survey for diving instructors regarding the economics of being a diving instructor. So today we hear from Darcy about this new survey, what its all about an how you can help contribute to it. By the way I just did the survey and it took less than 10 minutes.

086 What The Latest Diving Industry Survey Results Tell Us With William Cline

By Tec Clark Leave a Comment

In this episode of The Dive Locker Podcast we discuss first quarter 2021 diving industry survey results with William Cline.

Welcome To The Show!

Welcome to The Dive Locker Podcast, the podcast for dive professionals where we bring you the latest in diving industry resources that make you excellent at teaching techniques, risk management and dive business.

Last week the latest results of the Cline’s Diving Industry 1st Quarter of 2021 were released. Although the numbers are significantly down from this same time last year, we saw some things that were encouraging. Such as an increase from Q4 and a good amount of retailer confidence is also coming back.

Because of this I wanted to have my friend and industry colleague Willie Cline back on the show for him to discuss these results. We get into that plus a chat about the upcoming DEMA Show in November.

A little bit about Willie. Willie founded the Cline Group in 1990 as an international marketing consultancy, with many areas of expertise. The Cline Group is unique – no other company in the world specializes in marketing diving products and services. The company has been fortunate to represent in various projects, some of the world’s leading diving companies, governments and destinations. Willie saw a need for an industry survey, and since dive training agency would not share their numbers, he created his free industry survey that has been going on for __ years.

Items In This Episode

  • Travel data
  • Certification data
  • Projected outlook for 2nd quarter 2021
  • Equipment sales
  • What’s in store for the upcoming DEMA Show?
