“Tipping is not a city in China” that has to be one of my favorite signs about tipping. But there’s a reason why that and many other signs like “Crew works for tips” exist. It’s because people are not very accustomed to tipping for service outside of the bar and restaurant industry. In the diving industry the greatest area of tipping occurs on charter dive boats. But there’s a lack of common practice about tipping on dive boats – part of the reason is that dive boat charters can have a hefty price tag to them and adding a tip onto that is just not calculated. And in some cases it isn’t even thought of because divers think “wow, that persons job was to dive with me or to be out on the ocean, I’m not going to tip them, they love their job” or “I’d do this job for free.”
Well the fact is that divemasters and instructors and in some cases captains who are boat crew rely on tips as a substantial part of their income. And we as dive professionals are THE people to teach others about tipping. So that is what we’ll be talking about today. The need for tipping, how much and how to teach others how to do it.
