Welcome To The Show!
Welcome to the dive locker podcast, the podcast for dive professionals where we bring you the latest in diving industry resources that make you excellent at teaching techniques, risk management and dive business.
You know as the former national director of the YMCA Scuba program I get asked by many in the industry what happened to the YMCA scuba Program? And then there’s a ton of pro’s that see my resume and say YMCA had a scuba program? So in this episode I want to tell you the story of YMCA scuba, how it started, where it ended and where it is today.
Resources to Get Through These Crazy Times
But first what’s in the news regarding coronavirus and our industry. Again so many are stepping up with webinars to help their members at this time.
PADI is putting on a webinar series on diving business as well as hosting virtual member forums. In fact they have launched a whole Professional Resource Hub for PADI pro’s.
And DEMA is putting on a webinar on CARES Act Paycheck Protection Program with Tom Ingram. Navigating the SBA’s Economic Injury Disaster Loans & Emergency Economic Injury Grants
Earlier this week I took the DAN online learning course on Ears and Diving. It was really good, very insightful and best is I learned many things. You see as pro’s we can never stop learning. I will be a better instructor because of taking that one hour course.
To keep up with the coronavirus related items in the industry subscribe to both Dive News Wire and DeeperBlue. Check these out as I will have the link to all of them on our show notes page at ScubaGuru.com
Upcoming Episode on Fitness to Dive
And finally a heads up, I’ve heard from plenty of you that your exercise is down and your eating and drinking is up. I right there with you. But I began a couple weeks back to look into changing my health and fitness while at home. So I began researching fitness apps and diet programs, meals, you name it. So next week we are going to talk about some amazing new strategies at this time of lockdown to stay in fitness to dive shape. Shoutout to Kirk Krack and Mandy Rae they’ve been posting their family workouts on Facebook. You see we need to be different now. These are different times and like it or not, we need new routines.
YMCA Scuba Program & SEI
So, the YMCA had a scuba program? Yes, and Im proud to say I was one of the estimated 800,000 divers that received a YMCA certification. The YMCA scuba program was the first national scuba training program in the country being founded in 1959. And in 2008 the YMCA of the USA suspended the program and certification issuance. But, the legacy lives on in the scuba training agency called SEI Scuba Educators International. So, we will hear from Tom Leaird who was the Advisory Committee chairman of YMCA Scuba when YMCA of the USA closed its doors, then he brought it over and founded a new agency as a legacy agency of the YMCA Scuba program.
